Characterization and prospective study of waste deposits containing POP substances

Objectives

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have been heavily regulated at international, European and national level since the 1998 Aarhus Protocol. Because of their wide-ranging and diverse uses (pesticides, flame retardants, plasticisers, etc.) since the beginning of the twentieth century, and the increasingly strict regulations governing them, identifying products containing POPs is particularly complex, and all the more difficult to manage when the products become waste.
The aim of this study is to gain a better understanding of POPs, the waste containing them and the associated regulations. Initially, the project will draw up a state of the art of regulations on POPs and scientific knowledge on the subject. Secondly, an overview of waste containing POPs and the associated regulations will be drawn up, leading to a historical and prospective analysis of the product/waste flows concerned. The final part of the study will be devoted to a prospective analysis of POPs that are not yet regulated and the identification of best practices for the management of waste containing current and future POPs.
