Driven by the drive for energy transition, the biomass-energy sector is expanding in many European countries, and with it the waste and by-products of this sector. This study looks at the management of ash from industrial and collective biomass combustion facilities. Still often sent to landfill, this waste can nevertheless be recovered. The aim of this study is to provide a European overview of the flows, characteristics and recovery methods for this waste. It also takes stock of the conclusions reached by a number of European research programmes that have just come to an end, in terms of possible ways of recovering this waste. It emphasises the need to consolidate the return-to-soil sector (agriculture and forestry), the only proven large-scale recovery method.
