Installation and running costs of waste recovery units - Calculation guide, 2nd part

Summary

At a time when new industrial tools need to be developed to enable the deployment of the circular economy, particularly from the point of view of waste recovery, it is essential to be able to draw up preliminary technical and economic assessments for any investment project. To do this, it is necessary to have solid financial engineering data that is as up-to-date as possible. This is what this work provides. Designed as a genuine calculation guide, it can be used to construct preliminary design briefs (PDBs) thanks to the large amount of cost data (equipment, installation, operation, specific CO2 emissions, etc.) provided either in the form of reference cases or correlations. This work is illustrated by numerous numerical examples. Although more widely used, the application focuses more specifically on the following 4 cases:

  • DTL (Direct Thermochemical Liquefaction) units for the fast pyrolysis / liquefaction of biomass waste, as well as units for the thermal depolymerisation of used plastics,
  • Synthetic air gasification units, with CO2 capture,
  • Hydrothermal gasification units for aqueous effluents,
  • Waste-to-methane and/or carbon-free fuel conversion units (Pyro-M, P2M and P2L)

This 2nd part follows on from work using the same approach and dealing more specifically with the following units: waste sorting, composting, methanisation and incineration units (ref. no.18-0815/1A).
