End of waste - Transposition and practices in various members States of the European Union

Summary

In order to promote the circular economy, Article 6 of the European Waste Framework Directive (2008/98/EC) introduces the concept of "end of waste status" (ESW). This defines the conditions under which certain waste ceases to be waste. RECORD's objective was to take stock of the mechanisms implemented by the European Commission and the various Member States to achieve SSD and to analyse specific case studies. Different countries are studied in detail: European Union, United Kingdom, France, Ireland, Austria, Estonia and Italy. Specific SSD cases are presented: recycled plastics, aggregates from inert waste, oils recovered as fuel, CSR, compost and gypsum from synthetic gypsum. In addition to providing an overview of the current situation, the report also looks ahead to the future of these regulations (benefits, limitations, need for improvement).
