Recyclability of plastic packaging containing hazardous substances. Technical and regulatory situations - Knowledge available on sanitary risks

Summary

In a European context of development of the circular economy, many practices aimed at recycling all types of materials should see the light of day. With a view to maintaining a high level of environmental and health protection, this study seeks to describe the conditions under which plastic packaging that has contained hazardous products can be recycled. It provides a better understanding, at European level, of the current situation regarding the recycling of this so-called "soiled" packaging, from both a regulatory and technical point of view. To take this knowledge a step further, the study then looks at the migration of toxic molecules through a plastic matrix, as could occur with this type of waste, and at the associated health risks. Despite the contribution of certain elements, an analysis of the literature shows that this subject is still very little studied. This forward-looking study provides an interesting overview of a subject and processes that are still relatively unknown, and highlights the clear need for further studies and research if these processes are to be developed.
