Measuring biodiversity and evaluating ecosystem services in restored environments. Methods and trial applications

Summary

Regulations relating to polluted sites and soils now emphasise the need to restore biodiversity. Although we have seen the restoration of many of these sites in recent years, data on these experiments and their success remain limited. How can we assess the success of restoration measures in terms of biodiversity? This is what the RECORD project is trying to answer.
After summarising the French and European regulations on biodiversity restoration, this report reviews the main indicators for measuring key ecosystem functions and ecosystem services. The study focuses on two main types of restored environment: wetlands and grasslands. It then proposes a selection grid of indicators for assessing and monitoring the impact of restoration measures. Finally, the methodology developed is tested on three cases of site restoration (from RECORD members). This study opens up pragmatic and interesting prospects for assessing the restoration of degraded sites.
