The global battery market is growing fast. It has doubled since 2000 to more than 500 GWh. This dynamic raises many questions about the sustainability of this sector (availability of resources, end-of-life management, etc.). This study, which takes into account the four main geographical zones: China, the United States, Europe and Japan, begins with an overview of the battery market (different technologies, growth dynamics of user markets). The second part looks at the issues related to regulation, eco-design, safety, second life, the cost and availability of metals, which partly determine the battery market, but above all the battery recycling market. The third section describes the state of the art in battery recycling, including processes, mapping and an analysis of the strategies of the main players. Finally, in a forward-looking approach, the last section assesses the quantities of batteries that will reach the end of their life by 2030, and projects these figures in relation to current recycling capacities. In addition, a spreadsheet is available to RECORD members. They can use it to make their own forward-looking calculations.
