Corporate biodiversity footprint: mapping of different assessment methodologies and conception of a decision aid tool

Summary

In a context where biodiversity issues are becoming increasingly important, companies are seeking to better define their impact on living organisms in order to reduce it. To this end, a variety of approaches dedicated to understanding the relationship between organisations and biodiversity are emerging, including tools for measuring the biodiversity footprint.
The aim of this study is to help companies find their way around the existing tools by:

  • Shedding light on the regulatory requirements for measuring the biodiversity impact of businesses and on the various existing tools (via a public report).
  • Developing a decision support module enabling companies to identify the most appropriate tool(s) for their needs (via an Excel tool for RECORD members).

The report is based on the existing body of research on natural capital tools and on interviews with experts. It is divided into three parts. The first describes recent regulatory developments concerning the measurement and reporting of the impacts of businesses and financial companies on biodiversity. The second provides an overview of existing tools that enable companies to better identify their links and impacts on living organisms. The last section presents the methodology used to build the decision support module.
