The presence of emerging substances in end-of-life products, and therefore in waste, may present new risks to health and the environment. RECORD wanted to have a forward-looking view of this issue. A literature review, supplemented by interviews with experts, was used to summarise the information and knowledge available on the presence of certain categories of emerging substances in waste. These include nanoparticles, certain micropollutants, GMOs, pesticides and drug residues. This work shows the increasingly obvious links between substances, products and waste, and opens up a number of prospects and avenues for further research.
