A critical review of the utilization of life cycle assessment (LCA) and other global environmental assessment methods in the waste management sector

Summary

This study provides an overview of the use of global environmental assessments (Life Cycle Assessments, energy balances, carbon balances, etc.) in the field of waste management by the various players in the public and private sectors. The work focuses firstly on the types of players who participate and play a role in the use of these assessments, making a clear distinction between project promoters and those carrying out the studies. It identifies the practices, the context(s) in which the studies are carried out, the objectives of the studies, the types of waste studied and the types of studies carried out. One chapter deals with the understanding of the results by the project owner and the use made of the results by the latter. Another chapter looks at the opinions of stakeholders on the use of these methods and presents a review of feedback. Finally, the analysis concludes with methodological questions. The software used is listed, and the sensitive points relating to the methodology are developed.
