Demolition and deconstruction waste: deposit, caracterisation, treatment and recycling options

Summary

Because of its quantity and recovery potential, waste from the deconstruction and demolition of buildings is one of the most important sources of waste for which major recovery initiatives need to be put in place. This report sets out the regulatory context for the management of this waste, followed by a review of the available data on the sources. Selective dismantling, grouping, sorting and other practices are presented in the form of a general overview of practices in Europe, a more detailed description of the various platforms in France and the channels for recovering recycled materials. Finally, a presentation of demolition waste management methods in Germany and Austria puts the impact of the management policies implemented in France and these two countries into perspective. Interviews with various players in these sectors help to complete the analysis, suggest factors for improvement and identify a number of recommendations.
