Alternative routes of traditional combustion. State of the art

Summary

This prospective study looks at various alternatives to conventional combustion as used in waste incineration. The processes of oxycombustion, enriched air combustion, oxycombustion with flue gas recycling (O2/FGR), integrated pyro-gasification, thermochemical loop, air or oxygen combustion at high temperature are presented. After a detailed presentation of the operating principle and the advantages and disadvantages of each method, a summary of current knowledge is provided for each method, based in particular on current projects and validations, from the laboratory to the industrial stage. Related technologies such as oxygen production and gas or flue gas treatment, with or without CO2 capture, are also discussed. Finally, the most promising avenues are summarised according to various criteria.
