Energy recovery of automotive shredder residue, processes and technico-economic analysis. Situation in France and in Europe

Summary

The ELV Directive* sets various recovery targets for this sector by 2015 (re-use, recycling and energy recovery rates). In France, thanks to the efforts made by the entire automotive industry, the reuse and recycling rates seem achievable. However, the recovery rate (particularly energy recovery) is currently out of reach. Why is this so? With this study, RECORD is attempting to explain the reasons for this low rate, as well as the avenues for future development. This comprehensive study contains - a detailed description of the sources of ELV and shredder residue (characteristics, tonnages and geographical distribution), - a state of the art of the various processes for recovering energy from these residues. The report concludes with a prospective analysis to identify a number of levers for improvement.
