Critical feedback on the use of Geostatistical methods for the characterization of contaminated sites

Summary

The aim of this work was to draw up an international review of fifteen years' application of geostatistics to polluted sites and soils, because despite some relevant examples, the role of geostatistics (its operational added value and the conditions for its implementation) is still often debated. The work covers the following points: - international state of the art concerning these methods, - overview of existing training and software, - position of the various authorities on the subject, - survey of players confronted with this type of approach, - drafting of case studies. Particular attention is paid to the complementarity of this methodology with other approaches, such as geophysical measurements or on-site measurements. At the end of this analysis, the positive elements as well as the obstacles have been identified. Recommendations are provided to optimise the chances of success of such studies, but also to improve their operational integration into site remediation projects. Areas for research and development are also suggested.
