Asbestos characterization in solid matrix: State of the art and Good practices guidelines

Summary

Managing the asbestos problem is a major challenge, and the steps involved in detecting and characterising asbestos in solid matrices are essential. At present, standardised analysis methods only cover the detection and quantification of fibres in air. The analysis of fibres in solid matrices can involve a number of complex techniques that require a high level of expertise to implement and interpret. In view of this, RECORD is proposing: 1/ a state-of-the-art review of knowledge relating to the analysis of asbestos in solid matrices, together with a prospective study of the new analytical techniques currently being developed (in particular via the concept of emissivity) 2/ a guide to recommended best practice, the drafting of which is the result of the deliberations of a working group involving contracting authorities, project managers and laboratories.
